ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has become the first sport to become B Corp certified.

A B Corp (short for Certified B Corporation) is a for-profit company that has been independently certified to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Certification is issued by B Lab, a nonprofit organisation that evaluates companies using a comprehensive, evidence-based framework. To qualify, a company must demonstrate that it creates value not only for shareholders, but also for workers, communities, customers, and the environment.

By securing this status, the series codifies its mission to ‘Make Progress Thrilling’, challenging the sports industry, which has traditionally prioritised spectacle over systemic impact.

The status reminds the sporting world how Formula E continues to strive for success and break new ground, both on and off the track, and sets a new global standard for what modern sport can be.

Critical to Formula E’s B Corp Certification were the strong social and environmental standards at race events, meaningful contributions to local communities through targeted social impact programmes, best-practice worker wellbeing strategies, and the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Jeff Dodds, CEO, Formula E, said: “Most see sustainability as a seminar or a boardroom box to tick; we see it happening at 200mph around a corner in your city.

“Whether it’s pioneering sustainable aviation fuel or engineering a 100% recyclable race car, we are here to show the world that progress isn’t just necessary, it’s visceral.

“This isn’t a milestone to celebrate standing still; it’s a license to go even faster.”

Julia Pallé, VP Sustainability, Formula E, said: “Becoming B Corp certified is a powerful recognition that electric racing can do more than inspire, it can drive real, measurable change.

“By joining the B Corp community, we will collaborate, challenge each other and deepen our impact across sport and industry.”

Chris Turner, CEO, B Lab UK, said: “Formula E was the first sport globally to earn the Net Zero Pathway certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI), the first sport to set Science Based Targets, and has reduced its Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 55% since 2019.”

Formula E made the announcement at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, following the recent global launch of the GEN4.

GEN4 is the most advanced car in the all-electric series’ history, featuring a 100% recyclable construction and 20% recycled materials.

The GNE4 is set for its race debut in the 2026/27 season, as GEN3 drive to the curtain call in August this year at the London E-Prix.

Designed for racing at 200mph, the GEN4 proves that sustainable engineering does not compromise elite speed.

However, Formula E recently partnered with Google Cloud on a multi-year contract.

At the heart of the partnership is a mission to demonstrate the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive positive impact across Formula E’s business operations; everything from races to fans.

This multi-year agreement builds on the official partnership first formalised in January 2025.

Google Cloud’s significant elevation to Principal Partner marks Formula E’s adoption of additional Google Cloud technologies for its business, including integrating Gemini models across its ecosystem to accelerate performance, deliver faster, more efficient operations, and showcase innovation on a global stage.

AI is well known for its environmental concerns due to the electricity and water usage of generative AI like Gemini in its data centres, so this partnership is a little at odds with Formula E’s mission to be environmentally conscious and sustainable.
