Colton Herta joins Hitech F2 for 2026

IndyCar star Colton Herta announced today that he will join Hitech in Formula 2 next year.

At 25, Herta will start his F2 campaign while also being a reserve driver for Cadillac F1. That team will join the grid next year, along with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas.

Herta shared his excitement: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Hitech for the 2026 FIA Formula 2 season. This is a big shift in my career, and I’m ready for the challenge.”

Known for his success in IndyCar, Herta has been a runner-up in the championship and has many podiums and wins.

Reflecting on his IndyCar career, he said, “I’ve loved my time in IndyCar, and I’m proud of everything I achieved. I’ve always kept the door to F1 open, and this move is part of that ultimate ambition.”

Herta seems set to be the next American in F1, especially after Logan Sargeant’s lacklustre career.

To get a super licence, vital for F1 participation, Herta needs points from podiums and wins in F2. This licence is necessary for drivers in FP1 sessions for rookies or to race at the weekend.

As Cadillac’s reserve driver, Herta must get the licence without delay. Otherwise, he will not be able to step in for Pérez or Bottas if needed.

Clive Hatton, Hitech’s FIA Formula 2 team manager, acknowledged the challenge for the rookie: “He’s entering a new racing environment with different formats, high expectations, and a clear goal of moving to F1.

“But his determination and commitment are impressive.”
