Sam Bird, Ex-Formula E driver and now commentator, said Dan Ticktum could be the championship leader after the first two rounds if not for unfortunate incidents where other drivers took out Dan Ticktum. At the same time, he ran up in podium places.

Ticktum came under scrutiny for explicit messages on the radio following his clash in the Mexico City E-Prix, which took him out of the race, where he proclaimed none of the grid knew how to drive.

He was later upset by the stewards’ failure to take appropriate action on penalties.

Ticktum took to social media to explain himself and to call out those still bringing up his past mistakes as a young driver, which he has since apologised for, been punished for and learned from.

At the Miami E-Prix, Ticktum apologised for the language he used on the radio, acknowledging that it was a championship broadcast and that there was a young audience watching.

The CUPRA KIRO driver maintained his stance over the fairness and balance of the current stewarding, stating that he doesn’t believe the balance is quite right yet and that the lack of change led to someone shouting about it, which “unfortunately” ended up being him.

Sam Bird took to the defence of Ticktum after FP1, where Ticktum topped the session, as he believes Ticktum was right to be frustrated and to call out the standards of stewarding in Formula E, “whether you like him [Dan Ticktum] or not.”

The ex-McLaren Formula E driver said: “Dan has been particularly harshly treated in the last two races.

Now he could be here too as the championship leader after two races, but instead he is 40 points behind.

If stewards apply penalties for stuff like that, then it’s a tough pill to swallow”

The Miami E-Prix continues today, with qualifying and the race to come this evening. Watch on Formula E, ITV X, YouTube.
